Curriculum

Giovanni Fabbrocino graduated cum laude in Civil and Building Engineering at University of Naples Federico II. He got his Ph.D. in Structural Engineering at University of Naples Federico II and was appointed as Assistant Professor at Department of Structural Analysis and Design (DAPS) at the same University. He was the coordinator of the Materials and Structures Testing Laboratory of DAPS. Since 2003 he joined to the activities of AMRA –Analysis and Monitoring of Environmental Risks- Center of Competence in Campania Region, where he had in charge the development of the Seismic Risk Laboratory and particularly of the asynchronous two degrees of freedom shaking tables system.
He is associate Professor of Structural Engineering since 2005 at University of Molise School of Agriculture first and then to the School of Engineering.
He is member of the International Board of the Doctorate in Seismic Risk at the University of Naples Federico II, associated to the University of Molise. In such a context he was appointed as tutor of many Ph.D. students, research associates and post-doctoral fellows.
In November 2010, he won the competition at University Parthenope of Naples and was appointed as suitable for the position of Full Professor in Italian Universities.
His teaching activities cover many aspects of structural analysis and design of reinforced concrete structures, masonry buildings, seismic design of structures, steel constructions. He also participates to the permanent learning programmes for consultant and professional engineers in the field of advanced materials, seismic assessment of reinforced concrete structures, cultural heritage constructions, dynamic monitoring and experimental assessment of real constructions, National and International Seismic codes.
He had in charge also teaching activities in the field of continuum mechanics and computational mechanics (Ministry Italian scientific class 08/B2).
Research topics cover seismic vulnerability of existing reinforced concrete structures, seismic performances of existing components and system located in industrial plants, dynamic identification of structures and building, continuous monitoring of modal parameters o structures located in seismic prone areas under emergency conditions, seismic vulnerability of buried pipelines and other distributed infrastructures as well as dynamic response of flexible retaining walls.
He is member of the Society of Experimental Mechanics (SEM), of the International Society for Structural Health Monitoring of Intelligent Infrastructures (ISHMII) and of the Italian Association of Seismic Engineering (ANIDIS).
Numerical approach to structural problems has been constantly associated to experimental validation referring to full-scale specimens and to real constructions under operational conditions. He has been involved during his activity in many research projects issued by National and International Institutions. Among others, he carried out a research on vulnerability of industrial components, namely steel tanks, in the VIA project – Reduction of the seismic vulnerability of infrastructural systems and physical environment – issued by GNDT; he worked in the field of monitoring of critical structures in the framework of the PON TECSAS – Expert technologies for the remote control and the safeguard of the critical built environment – He had in charge the scientific coordination of the MEETING project - Mitigating earthquakes effects in towns and in industrial regional districts – appointed by INTERREG IIIA programme commission at the University of Molise. He was also involved in the activities related to the seismic risk of industrial facilities and to the dynamic identification and monitoring of infrastructures and buildings in the FIRB project RBIN047WCL entitled Assessment and reduction of seismic risk to large infrastructural systems, scientific coordinator Prof. G.M. Calvi.
In the field of steel and concrete composite constructions, he participated to the numerical and experimental activities of the European projects ECSC 7210-PR-250 “Applicability of composite structures to sway frames” and ECOLEADER HPR-CT-1999-00059 project “Cyclic and PsD testing of a 3D steel-composite structure”.
He has been the scientific coordinator of three research units at University of Molise within the RELUIS-DPC 2005-2008 project. Work was focussed on steel and concrete composite structures, monitoring of constructions for seismic emergency management and non-destructive testing of concrete in existing buildings.
He is involved in the RELUIS 2 DPC 2010-2013 projects and is the scientific coordinator of two units, the first focussed on monitoring of structures and the second one on vulnerability of buried structures in industrial plants.
He is the scientific coordinator of the NANOSENSE project - Biomimetics and NANOtechnologies for Structural hEalth moNitoring of civil StructurEs – selected as relevant project in the bilateral collaborative action between Italy and US promoted by the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
He is the scientific coordinator of the Structural and Geotechnical Dynamics Laboratory StreGa at University of Molise. In the context of StreGa lab activities he has in charge the responsibility of many collaborations with Territorial institutions like ANAS spa and the Soprintendenza dei Beni Architettonici e Ambientali del Molise.
He has been till May 2013 the delegate of the Rector of the University of Molise to the management and development of University building and facilities.
He is member of the UNI-SC4 commission for the development of the new design codes for steel and composite constructions.
He is author of about 300 scientific papers, published on peer-reviewed International journals, National journals, Proceedings of National and International conferences and symposia.
He is involved as reviewer for many International journals, among which it is worth mentioning Engineering Structures, Steel and Composite Structures, Mechanical Systems and Signal Processing, Journal of Vibration and Control, Structural Engineering and Mechanics.
