Giuseppe Maiorano is full Professor from 1.11.2006 (D.R. n. 1783 del 31.10.2006) at University of Molise (Campobasso, Italy) for the academic discipline AGRI-09/C (Animal Science).
From 2015 he is Coordinator of the International PhD programme (DOT 1339335) in “Agricultural Technologies and Biotechnologies” (Partners: Italy – Poland – Slovakia).
From 2023 he is Coordinator of the PhD programme in Agri-food Production Sciences (DOT22SFTY2).
From 2000 to 2012 was delegate for International relations of the Faculty of Agriculture, currently he is delegate for the Department of Agricultural, Environmental and Food Sciences.
From 2009 to 2017, he was General coordinator of the International PhD course in “Welfare, biotechnology and quality of animal production”, (Partners: Italy – Poland – Slovakia).
From 2022 he is Rector’s Advisor for International relations.
He is member of the Bioetic Committee of the University of Molise from 2024 to 2027.
From 2009 he is component of the International scientific committee of the International Scientific
Conference in Safety and Quality of Raw Materials and Foodstuffs (Nitra, Slovakia).
He is Member of the Group of evaluation experts (GEV) in the Italian Evaluation of Research
Quality 2015-2019 (VQR).
PROFESSIONAL EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING
He obtained the degree in Agricultural Sciences in 1986 at the University of Bari (Italy) with the
maximum score (110/110). He began his research activity in 1988, obtaining a fellowship at the
Department of Animal Science, University of Wyoming (USA), under the guidance of Prof. Ray A.
Field, where he contributed to the research on the physiological and commercial maturity of lambs.
Subsequently, he had the opportunity to spend other two time periods in the same institution: in
1991 (in cooperation with Professors Ray A. Field and Richard J. McCormick) and in 1999 (in
cooperation with Professors Ray A. Field, Richard J. McCormick and Rule D. C.). In 1988, he was
the winner of an open competition for university researcher in animal physiology at the Faculty of
Agriculture, University of Molise (UNIMOL). From 1989 he carries out research activities at the
UNIMOL. Starting from 1997, he was assigned to the academic discipline of Animal Science
(UNIMOL).
Since 2001 he has been Associate Professor in Animal Sciences; from 2006 he is Full Professor in
Animal Sciences.
INSTITUTIONAL ACTIVITIES
From 25.11.2022 he is Rector’s Advisor for International relations.
From May 2012 to April 2015 he was the Vice Head at the Department of Agricultural,
Environmental and Food Sciences (UNIMOL).
From academic year 2003/2004 he is Department delegate for international relations.
He was elected in the Board of the Faculty of Agriculture, as a representative of the Researchers
(1996/1999 and 1999/2002).
From 1999 to 2002, he was a component of the Board of Directors of the University of Molise in
representation of the Researchers and from 2002 to 2005, as a representative of the Associate
Professors.
In 1992 he was elected as a component of the Integrated Academic Senate, in representation of the
Researchers.
He was appointed by the Board of Directors of the University of Molise, in the session of
25/05/2012, President of the University Commission for cultural and recreational initiatives in favor
of students, a role he still plays today.
 
He was a didactic responsible for the participants to the projects of formation “Tutors for
Enterprises” and “Project Operators” of the “Productive Chain of the Pig Meat”, entrusted by the
Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research (MIUR) (Decree of October 15, 1999. Prot.
n. 519 Res.) to the Scientific and Technological Park of Molise (Moliseinnovazione Soc. Cons. a. r.
l.).
He was a member of the job committee and teacher, of the international master in “Organization
and Sustainable Management of the Animal Production and Environmental Protection” within the
internationalization plan for MIUR (Decree of the Italian Ministry of the University Research, June
21, 1999).
In 2011, he was nominated Coordinator of the Study Commission “Innovative methodological
approaches for the evaluation of the nutritional, sensorial and technological characteristics of meat”
within the Scientific Association of Animal production.
Nominated by Academic Senate of the University of Molise, he was a member of the University
Board as coordinator of the 07 area (Agriculture Science and Veterinary) to research evaluation
(2001/2003).

SCIENTIFIC ACTIVITY
Fields of research:
- use of biotechnologies (in ovo administration of prebiotics, probiotics and symbiotics) for broiler
chicken production;
- effects of nutritional factors on the metabolism of intramuscular collagen and cross-links, on
metaphyseal growth cartilage, on lipid metabolism, to improve the production and quality of meat
of different species;
 
- physiological maturity of growing animals in sheep, goat, cattle, swine, rabbit and poultry, with
particular reference to the histological aspects of the muscular, connective, bone and adipose
tissues, as well as the nutritional and qualitative aspects of the meat;
- reproductive efficiency in sheep, cattle and rabbit, and effects of the technique of synchronization
and induction of oestrus on reproductive function and metabolic profiles.

TEACHING ACTIVITY
The teaching activity, as owner and on assignment, involved the following courses: Genetic
improvement of animals in livestock production; Pathophysiology of animal reproduction and
artificial fertilization; Special Zootechnics II; Morphofunctional Evaluation of Animals in
Zootechnical Production; Special Zootechnics (Milk production technique); Special Zootechnics
(Technique of meat production); General zootechnics (at the Faculty of Agriculture of Foggia of the
University of Bari); Evaluation of the quality of products of animal origin; Laboratory of sensory
and rheological analysis of meat and meat products.
Currently he holds teaching activity for the following courses: Mountain livestock production;
Animal Husbandry, Animal Production, and courses in the PhD course "Agriculture, Technologies
and Biotechnologies".
REFEREE AND EDITOR ACTIVITY
Referee for international journals (Journal of Animal Science, Meat Science, Animals, Small
Ruminant Research, Animal, Italian Journal of Animal Science) and national and international
congresses.
He is member of the Editorial Board of the journals: Animals, Journal of Microbiology,
Biotechnology and Food Sciences, Animal Science and Genetics.
He is member of several national and prestigious international scientific associations.
AWARDS
On January 29th, 2013, he received an award: "Certificate of honour in recognition of his prolonged
devotion to scientific cooperation and encouragement" from the Faculty of Biotechnology and Food
Science, Slovak University of Agriculture in Nitra (SK).
In June 10th, 2014, he received from the Academiae Scientiarum Agriculture Slovacae the
acknowledgement of Academic Stranger, for the following reasons: “Your life-long devotion to
science, education and practices, your brilliant work over many years, your personal qualities have
set an example to the coming generation, and inspiration to use all. You are famous for your
characteristic way of presentation of a lot of new knowledge from animal sciences and for effective
 
contribution to discussion.” The decree was signed by the Minister of Agriculture of the Slovak
Republic.
